From the Eagle's Nest

The 2003 spring sports scene at McDonogh School was like no other spring in recent memory. Mother Nature wreaked havoc on try-outs in late February with snow-covered fields, courts, and diamonds. Consequently, the first two weeks of league competition didn’t happen. Postponements followed postponements, including forty-two games during one unusually cold and rainy week. To keep the weekly schedule from getting too jam-packed, many non-league games were dropped in order to get the league games played. Still, the coaches and athletes kept an optimistic spirit and persevered with the cold temperatures and raw weather. A huge amount of credit goes to them for their positive attitude and flexibility. The spring season is typically the shortest season in the year because of spring vacations and early departures of seniors for projects and graduations.

McDonogh is not unlike many of its independent-school counterparts, who also battled the weather conditions and inaccessible fields. We are more fortunate than other schools, however, because we can at least go inside to practice when there is inclement weather. Our Rollins-Luetkemeyer Athletic Center offers teams a warm and spacious facility to practice and get some work done. Teams had a rotating schedule to allow practice time for all. As an example, varsity boys and girls lacrosse squads took turns coming in from 6:30 to 8 a.m., leaving afternoon time for the junior varsity. We hope that we will never have another spring like this one, but if it happens, we will be ready.

Congratulations to all our varsity and junior varsity teams who played well and got to the league playoffs despite adverse conditions for much of the season. Check www.mcdonogh.org for the complete spring season results.
