GQ Boys Take the Stage

The competition went off without a hitch Sunday March 28 as a group of nine seniors and two juniors vied for the prized title. The gala event began with the introduction of the three hostesses and organizers – Meredith I. ’04, Brittanie S. ’04, and Annie F. ’04. – as well as the five judges – Headmaster Bo Dixon, Director of Studies Dan McGuire, English teacher Cynthia Cox, class dean Libet Ottinger, and History teacher Bridget Collins.

Each of the eleven competitors strutted his stuff on the catwalk in casual wear and then again in tuxedos from AfterHours formalwear (Janda Florists provided the flowers). In between, a nearly full house watched a dazzling array of talents--from music to dance with a little bit of sketch comedy thrown in for good measure.

Even when broadly categorized, there was nothing conventional about the eleven acts. Dances spanned the spectrum from ballet to breakdance to rave to hip-hop to a striptease on crutches. Musical acts encompassed classical, classic rock, rap, ballads, and acoustic.

The eventual winner, Robert H. '04 began his performance with Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” on piano. After deciding it was too somber, he burst into the classic Christmas carol “Sleigh Ride.” Not content with just piano, he then frolicked across the stage and picked up his clarinet, which was resting against a backdrop of plush penguins and Styrofoam “snow” balls.

Third-place winner Cameron had the audience in hysterics with his rendition of Adam Sandler’s “The Hanukkah Song,” altered to name McDonogh students, and accompanying slideshow. Runner-up Nathan impressed the crowd with a duet of the Righteous Brothers’ “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” with Brooke P. ’04

Corey C. ’04, Nick H. ’04, Tristram T. ’05, Devon P. ’04, and Andrew W. ’04 competed through the talent competition. Jon B. '04, Chris L. '05, and Greg S. '04 made it through the interview round, where contestants were asked such questions as "Why did the chicken cross the road?" and "What would you do with a million dollars?"

After the hostesses crowned McDonogh’s Mr. GQ 2004, Robert H. ’04. explained that he wanted proceeds to the B&O Railroad Museum. Also honored was Jenn W. ’04 with a special GQ award for her commitment to nearly every production to grace the stage of the Horn Theater this year.

The real winner was the contest itself, which contestants and organizers believe was the best ever. The backstage atmosphere was full of camaraderie. As runner-up Nathan B. ’04 comments, “I think Jon said it best during his talent that backstage it was like a fraternity, we were all really close and I loved every guy who was in it. I had so much fun and it's a shame we won’t get to do it again.” Semi-finalist Chris L. ’04 adds, “Before and during the show, all of the other contestants were very supportive. Although it was a competition, no one really thought of it that way. Clearly everyone wanted to win, but we all know that the best man was crowned.”

And Mr. GQ himself, highly enthusiastic about his victory, reflects, “I never thought I’d win a Mr. GQ competition when entering McDonogh in ninth grade. But this year when it was announced, a lot of people told me to go out for it so I did and it was one of the best experiences I’ve had here. All these people, including some teachers and middle schoolers I've never talked to before, came up to congratulate me.”
