One word in McDonogh’s athletic philosophy changed over the summer. Good became GREAT. As in GREAT sportsmanship. It’s a charge Athletic Director Mickey Deegan places equally among student athletes, coaches, parents, and fans.
As Deegan wrote to parents last month: “The Athletic Department plans to make a concerted effort to address the issues of sportsmanship, character building, and respect for others, especially in the context of sports. We are all too familiar with the news of outrageous behaviors of professional athletes, fans, and parents that range from berating officials to demeaning opposing players . . . I am writing to ask your help, as we work collectively, family and school, to cultivate a sense of right and wrong in our athletes and to set a positive tone at games.”
Deegan emphasized that knowing how to lose with grace is as important as knowing how to win in the same manner. “Let’s be the best role models we can be in front of our kids and colleagues,” Deegan continued. “Let’s dare to be different!”
