Middle schoolers representing all 25 social studies classes tested their geography knowledge today on the Ceres M. Horn Theatre stage in the annual Geography Bee. One by one, they stepped up to the microphones to answer a range of questions about cities, states, regions, countries, and continents. Each was allowed two misses.
Most remained in the competition until a written question stumped everyone but eighth graders Dave, Greg, and Jake. Emcee and social studies teacher Ted Scocos asked the finalists for an answer to this: In what country would you take a sauna in Helsinki? Only Greg came up with the correct response, Finland.
With that, Mr. Scocos proclaimed Greg the winner of McDonogh’s 2007 Geography Bee. The audience clapped and cheered as Greg accepted the medal from Mr. Scocos and congratulations from the other two finalists.
More than 6,000,000 middle schoolers nationwide participate in the annual Geography Bee, which is sponsored by the National Geographic Society. Winners of school competitions take written tests to see if they advance to the various state bees. The national finals are televised in late spring.
