Head of School Search is Well Underway

The search to find the 12th head of McDonogh School is well underway. Search Committee Chairperson Mike Falcone '79 and board members Stacey Boyer ’76, Howard Klein ’76, Fred Mitchell ’50, Donna Hill Staton, and Jack Luetkemeyer recently reviewed an initial batch of resumes and met with candidates. The quality of the applicant pool, says Falcone, is a tribute to McDonogh's outstanding reputation.

Interviews of a select few will follow in October. That’s also when the support groups representing the broader school community will join the process. No strict timeline exists, although ideally a candidate will be selected by winter break, according to Falcone.

Here is a summary of the search process to date:

  • April 2006: The Board of Trustees hires Carney, Sandoe and Associates (CS) to identify and screen candidates.

  • May 2006: CS senior search consultants Jay Crawford and Rayna Loeb conduct on-campus interviews with teachers, students, parents, and alumni. They also invite McDonogh constituents to respond to an electronic survey, which yields five times the number of expected replies.

  • June 2006: CS publishes an Invitation to Apply, a detailed, eight-page document describing McDonogh and its requirements for the next head of school, to attract high-caliber candidates from all over the country.

  • July-September 2006: CS recruits and screens candidates. The consultants are very impressed with the applicant pool.

  • September 2006: CS submits resumes of the best candidates to the search committee for review. The committee screens the group further and begins confidential interviews.
