The shock of receiving the Thomas R. Harper Endowed Teaching Chair at the opening faculty/staff meeting rendered Middle School English and Drama teacher Jon Aaron momentarily speechless. To his colleagues who rib him for longwindedness, the temporary loss of words revealed how deeply felt the honor was. When he collected himself enough to speak, it was noted by his "official timekeeper" and colleague Tom Young '70, that the speech was under 60 seconds.
Headmaster Bo Dixon spoke eloquently about Aaron's passion for innovative teaching, the strength of his relationships with students and the deep love he has for the school. He is famous for bringing the talents of his students to the fore by creating original dramatic vehicles for them. "Most important, his respect for the children in his classroom is evident in the way he helps them find the power of their own voices and the beauty of their own stories."
McDonogh established its first endowed chairs in 1998 to reward great teaching and recognize individual faculty members for being vital to the school. Recipients hold these chairs for a period of three years and receive an annual stipend in addition to salary.
