Then, Director of Religious Studies John Grega told the unusual story of Harrison Swalm '38, a Canadian citizen who interrupted a promising college career to serve his country against the Axis powers in World War II. Swalm died when the ship on which he served, the HMCS Regina, was torpedoed off the coast of Normandy.
Mr. Grega continued the story by reading part of a letter Swalm's mother sent to the headmaster to report her son's untimely death. In it, she told of Harrison's disciplined nightly study habits. She wrote: "He made a perfect painting of the corner of his room where he studied, with desk, typewriter, papers and books and the chair pushed back . . . to me it is a symbolic painting of all the chairs of the students of the world who left unfinished their education to go to war. . ."
Directing students' attention to the tableau of an empty chair in the center of the field house, Mr. Grega reminded them to consider "the unfinished work, begun for the good of others and left for others to complete."
The ceremony concluded with Alumni Association President Courtney Wyatt '85 and Mark G. '04 placing the traditional wreath in front of the monument in Memorial Court as Taps was played.
