While the weather was sunny and warm, the grounds of Childs Memorial Terrace were still too wet to accommodate an outdoor ceremony. So the fourth-graders learned yet another lesson in flexibility. Beaming with pride, they followed the LS drum corps into the athletic center.
After representatives from each classroom displayed handmade banners symbolic of the events of the year, the focus turned to the fourth-graders. Reading specialist Cheryl Seal characterized the class with statistics she compiled: places they've traveled, nicknames they prefer, sports they play, and aspirations they have for the future.
Then, Headmaster Bo Dixon presented each student with a certificate of promotion.
After that, Mr. Dixon issued his annual milkshake challenge. What is your own personal slogan, he asked them? And what should McDonogh's slogan be? Those who accept the challenge must write on the topic (an essay, not an e-mail) and send it to him by mid-summer. Their reward: milkshakes with the headmaster next year.
The ceremony was made special by several musical performances--third-graders on recorders, and kindergartners, pre-firsters, first-graders, and second-graders in song. Last came the farewell to the Class of 2011 from all their LS teachers. Faculty and staff lined the gym from side to side, giving smiles, handshakes, and hugs to each graduate.
As has become tradition, the jubilant fifth-graders then tossed their blazers into the air. And, with a twist this year, into the basketball hoop.
