Lower School reading specialist Cheryl Seal holds the Raymond B. Oliver ’40 Endowed Teaching Chair. During her 21-year McDonogh career, she has served as pre-first assistant, lead pre-first teacher, fourth grade teacher, dorm parent, and reading specialist, her dream job. She coordinates the pen-pal program between Lower School children and McDonogh alumni, and she often greets the children at the bus loop as they arrive in the morning.
Middle School scheduler and math department head Ken Waller is the Rollins-Luetkemeyer Endowed Chair holder. An alumnus, Waller joined the faculty as a math teacher in 1984 and has dedicated his career to McDonogh’s middle schoolers ever since. He developed an accelerated math program for top achievers, and with wife, Wanda, instituted the Young Actors Theatre as a summer program. Active in the Association of Independent Maryland Schools (AIMS), he has planned and run the AIMS Experienced Teachers Institute since its inception.
Dave Harley, head of Upper School history and director of international programs, is the new Howard C. “Dutch” Eyth Endowed Chair holder. Now in his 26th year on the faculty, Harley is an intelligent and dedicated teacher whose students regard him as a prime source of influence, motivation, and encouragement. He has established exchange programs with schools in the Ukraine, Japan, and most recently, Slovakia. Harley also plays key roles in McDonogh’s annual double-self-enveloping Spirit Parade and the Cardboard Boat Race.
McDonogh established its first endowed chairs in 1998 to reward great teaching and recognize individual faculty members for being vital to the school. Recipients hold these chairs for a period of three years and receive an annual stipend in addition to salary.
