Housekeeping Staff Named Unsung Heroes

During the Middle School morning meeting on May 3, the sixth grade students and teachers honored McDonogh’s unsung heroes, the housekeeping staff. They did so as part of the annual Paul T. Spies '73 Community Service Project.

“Our country today is full of heroic people who are not the presidents, military leaders or Wall Street wizards, but who are doing something that keeps us all alive. Our McDonogh is full of heroic people. We just need to stop and take the time to recognize them!” said Margaret Bitz, of the sixth grade teaching team.

In addition to working late hours to create a nice environment for students and teachers, the housekeeping staff was recognized for adding to the pleasant school atmosphere.

The sixth graders interviewed each member of the housekeeping staff and typed up a biography page on each honoree. These biography pages are part of a creative mural on the first floor of the Finney Building that Jeanne Mulligan, reading teacher, and sixth grade artists created using only cleaning products. The biography pages were also placed in a beautiful booklet that each honoree received, in addition to a poem and card.

An entertaining musical number performed by the sixth grade teaching team concluded the presentation. After that, the housekeeping staff was invited to a sumptuous brunch just for them.

The award was created in memory of Paul T. Spies '73, who attended McDonogh for part of his eighth grade year before he became ill and died. He was an outstanding school citizen with great enthusiasm for making McDonogh a happy and constructive place.
