Before their final regular-season lacrosse game on Friday, May 9, vs. Mt. St. Joe, the McDonogh Eagles honored the memory of former player Matt Cowdrey '03 by retiring his team jersey, #24. Cowdrey died tragically in a drowning accident in January 2005 while a student at McDaniel College.
Standing in the John McDonogh Stadium, Headmaster Charlie Britton presented Matt's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Cowdrey, with a framed #24 jersey. The four 2008 team captains accepted a second framed jersey, which will be hung permanently in the Rollins-Luetkemeyer Athletic Center.
Athletic Director Mickey Deegan delivered the following tribute:
"Good afternoon and welcome to McDonogh School. We are very happy to have with us our players’ families, student supporters, and friends and family of Matt Cowdrey, Class of 2003, who have made the trip from Easton, Maryland to be with us today for this special ceremony.
From the hymn, “On Eagle’s Wings”… “And He will raise you up on Eagle’s wings, Bear you on the breath of dawn, Make you to shine like the sun And hold you in the palm of His hand.”
It is a rare occurrence to retire a player’s jersey in high school, but we are doing so today because Matt Cowdrey was a rare human being whose smile brightened a room and whose laughter was infectious. Fun-loving, adventurous, and committed to friends and loved ones, Matt’s time on earth was cut way too short in a boating accident in 2005.
Matt loved the sport of lacrosse. Passionate about this game, Matt played his heart out for every team he was on from the time he was a little boy to the time he played for Easton High School, McDonogh School, Lehigh University, and McDaniel College.
Matt’s brief time with us at McDonogh (only two years) was special and we will never forget him. As a way to remember Matt’s legacy as a wonderful human being and teammate, we are retiring his jersey, #24. We will hang Matt’s black jersey in our Hall of Fame corridor for all student athletes to see. We invite McDonogh’s captains, Tyler F., Brian H., Tyler G., and KC W. to come forward and receive this frame on behalf of the lacrosse team.
We know Matt is smiling down on all of us today and we would now like to present to his parents, Roy and Dael, the framed orange jersey that reads,
Matt Cowdrey, McDonogh Lacrosse Player, 2001-2003
Thank you all for being here to celebrate the life of Matt Cowdrey. Go Eagles!
