Working in teams positioned in different cross-sections of the waterway, students measured depths and widths, sifted through sediment and rocks, and uncovered water bugs and other creatures. They spent several hours on the sunny October 5 morning observing and recording their observations.
Each team had the same series of questions to answer. “We were supposed to find out what color the stream is and if there’s any pollution,” said Brittany. “How fast the stream was moving,” added Andrew. “Different plants that grow in and near the stream,” said Emily.
In the course of their investigation, students found all kinds of bugs, from midges to flatheaded bay flies to beetles. They also identified minnows and crayfish. An assortment of trash also caught their eyes: a taillight, a glass bottle, a truck tire, cardboard, and even a traffic cone.
“It was really fun because we got to be independent,” said Katye. “We were supposed to figure things out for ourselves.”
