Commencement, an end and a beginning for the 138 members of the Class of 2006, was every bit as glorious as the weather on June 9.
Overnight rains gave way to pure sunshine, which cast a lovely light on the graduates as they made their way across Childs Memorial Terrace to collect diplomas, handshakes, and alumni membership cards.
Classmates seemed completely relaxed as they arrived for the festivities. They chuckled and smiled with appreciation as faculty speaker Bridget Collins ’90 offered parting words to them during the baccalaureate ceremony in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre. “McDonogh will always be with you,” she told them, reflecting on the meaning of the stars on the school seal, “because you have within you those six gifts of labor, patience, wisdom, honor, truth, and love. They will guide you through your life.”
Gathering one last time in Tagart Memorial Chapel, '06 class members received their boutonnieres and bouquets of red roses. Senior Class Dean Bill Seal beckoned them to the chapel steps, the bagpiper heralded their procession, and teachers lining the way to the terrace applauded and cheered as the seniors walked by.
The ceremony included plenty of delightful moments: the special welcome extended to grandparents and great grandparents, senior speaker Brett Fader’s poignant and funny reflection, impromptu hugs between two Upper School teachers and their ’06 children, and the headmaster’s visible emotion as he said farewell to the graduates.
The Class of 2006 has a distinctive claim to fame. In it are 17 members of McDonogh’s very first kindergarten class. Tucked in each of their diploma folders was a tiny piece of the original ribbon cut at the kindergarten dedication 13 years ago.
