When fourth-grade teacher Craig Whiteford told his class about a former colleague stationed in Iraq until April 2005, the students wanted to know all about Sgt. Ken Ebo. “We had an idea to send a big, big care package to him,” said Peyton.
They didn’t send just one, they sent 24.
Following a list provided by Sgt. Ebo’s wife, three fourth-grade classes contributed to the collection (Mrs. Reed’s class will coordinate a second mailing in January). Students in Mr. Whiteford’s class packaged, addressed, sealed, and carried the boxes to the mailroom on December 1.
The fourth-graders reeled off a long list of what they enclosed. An artificial Christmas tree. Ornaments. Sheets. Ziploc bags. Toothpaste. Wipes. Granola bars. Mixed nuts. “Tons of candy”—Twizzlers, gum, lollipops—“because they give it to the [Iraqi] kids.” Magazines. Books. “Stuff that won’t rot.”
All wrote letters and drew pictures for Sgt. Ebo and those in his unit. Michael included puzzles he made. “We wished them luck and we sent them news,” said one. “We told them our thoughts on the war.”
With the boxes packed, Mr. Whiteford’s students reflected on what they learned. Said Megan: “It makes me think what it would be like to be a soldier.”
Added Alli: “A candy cane would be extremely special to them because they don’t have a lot.”
And Kristina: “It makes you feel good to do something for the soldiers in Iraq.”
