Keelty 215 Dedicated as Corcoran Room

The Corcoran Room’s opulent furnishings allow it to serve a number of functions. With its handsome solid ash 16-seat Harkness Table, it becomes the first classroom at McDonogh outfitted specifically to accommodate the Harkness method of teaching, a student-based learning technique originated at Philips Exeter Academy in the 1930s and used widely in New England independent schools.

The large oval table has also already seen much service as a conference room for faculty and student groups. But with its sophisticated array of built-in high-tech equipment, the Corcoran Room is additionally well suited for use as a presentation space.

One feature surprisingly missing from the Corcoran Room is a teacher’s desk! The good news is that no teacher need be displaced from a primary workspace whenever another teacher or group uses the room. In fact, the intent is for the room to be in constant use by a variety of people and groups.

Some traditional trappings of a Des Corcoran classroom remain despite the extensive renovation: well-worn but still useful Warriner’s grammar texts, a literary map of the British Isles, and a McDonogh chair donated by alumnus and former trustee Jerry Bias ’86.

Open since September, the Corcoran Room has been received most positively by the several faculty who teach there, the students who have taken classes there, and the many others who have visited!
