Lacrosse tournament cancelled

Earlier today, Athletic Director Mickey Deegan and Bob Rush, the campus liaison for facility rentals, determined that the seven McDonogh fields to be used for the October 2 tournament are unplayable. Following recent heavy rains, the grass fields are soft and contain puddles of standing water.

Immediately after making the decision, the school notified tournament organizers from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Maryland. At the same time, Headmaster Bo Dixon authorized a contribution to the organization in an amount close to the tournament’s expected ticket and vending sales. All are very disappointed that the popular event can’t be played here.

The school regrets the unfortunate circumstances but cannot allow the wear-and-tear of the 14-team round-robin tournament on its waterlogged grass fields. With six weeks left in the fall sports season, the fields must be in condition to accommodate the 58 remaining home games of 20 school teams. McDonogh has been the site of the Lacrosse for Leukemia tournament for the past five years.

Deegan and Rush checked the fields twice today, at 9 a.m. and 12 noon. An independent contractor from Growing Solutions also judged the fields unplayable.
