Coretta Scott King. Ossie Davis. Rosa Parks. Richard Pryor. The familiar faces and names appeared on the huge screen in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre during the February 16 assembly as the confident voice of Jameice D. '09 triumphantly delivered the Black National Anthem "Lift Every Voice and Sing." Beautiful, haunting and proud, it was a fitting beginning for the Black Awareness Club's celebration of Black History month.
Invoking the mythic Sankofa bird, which flies forward while looking back, the BAC showed through poetry, song and dance that "whatever we have lost, forgotten, or been stripped of can be reclaimed, revived, preserved, and carried on." Performances included a recitation of Robert Hayden's "Frederick Douglass," a devastating rendition of "Strange Fruit," powerful dance numbers, and songs from both the pop and gospel genres. The assembly ended on strong note with a routine from the ever-popular step squad, whose members smacked and clapped hands, stomped their feet, and wisecracked to the end.
Director of Diversity Sharon Howell and alumnae Lauren Dandridge '00 and Jamie Haines '98 congratulated the BAC after the performance. Haines, recalling her years in the dilapidated Edwards Gym, remarked on how wonderful it was to see them on a proper stage and of how proud she was of how they'd grown. "There are so many MORE of you now!"
