"What a special group of students you are!" exclaimed head of Lower School Noreen Lidston to the Class of 2014. The entire Lower School community gathered June 5 to celebrate the fourth-graders' promotion to Middle School and herald the advance of students in the lower grades.
A parade of class and grade-level banner-carriers made their way to Childs Memorial Terrace first. The drum corps followed, leading their classmates to their place of honor beside the terrace.
In her welcome, Mrs. Lidston shared a long list of facts about the departing lower schoolers. Then, each member of the Class of 2014 walked across the terrace to receive a certificate of promotion from Headmaster Bo Dixon.
Dixon addressed the graduates by reading them three poems by his favorite young writer, the late Mattie Stepanek. As has become tradition, he invited the rising fifth-graders to write to him over the summer in exchange for milkshakes next year. The assignment: three poems. The inspiration: Stepanek's Journey Through Heartsongs, which Dixon bought and inscribed for each class member.
All Lower School teachers, administrators, and special guests then formed a long line across the front of the terrace to congratulate each graduate. Handshakes, hugs, and high-fives for all!
Back in their seats for the exchange of class banners and the postlude, graduates began to take off their blazers in anticipation. Sure enough, the minute Mrs. Lidston proclaimed the ceremony's end, the blazers started flying high.
