Mardi Gras was the theme of Lower School Chapel on Friday, February 23. In true New Orleans style, Upper School Instrumental Music teacher Don New played the saxophone as students in pre-first through fourth grade arrived at the chapel wearing colorful masks and beads.
Head of Religious Studies John Grega opened the celebration with a prayer for all the people in New Orleans, especially the students at our sister school, McDonogh 26, in Gretna, Louisiana. At the conclusion of the prayer, Mr. Grega asked everyone to raise their masks high in honor of everyone who was impacted by Hurricane Katrina.
The program included a performance by second graders singing their very own version of “Good Morning Blues.” Mr. Grega also entertained students with a tall tale about Charles Durand, the King of Mardi Gras.
After the closing prayer, everyone paraded back to the Lower School to the tune of “When the Saints Go Marching In,” played by Mr. New on the saxophone and Mrs. Richter’s third graders on their kazoos.
