The McDonogh community came out in force October 14 for the 15th annual Komen Maryland Race for the Cure in Hunt Valley. For the second straight year, McDonogh assembled the largest team and made the largest team donation, more than $47,000 for breast cancer education and research in Maryland.
Among the most appreciative of the school's great turnout was sixth grade reading teacher and breast cancer survivor Jeanne Mulligan. Speaking with WJZ-TV's Sharon Gibala on live television, Mulligan said how exhilarated she felt to have 1,263 from McDonogh supporting the cause. Many of Mulligan students were on hand. So were entire sports teams, including varsity wrestling and volleyball. Parents and their children walked and ran together, grandparents, too.
An additional contingent of teachers, parents, and students--most from the cross country team--offered cups of water and encouragement to what seemed like an endless flow of runners and walkers midway through the race. "The positive spirit emanating from this water team is almost palpable, and I am sure many a sick woman walks by and is warmed by their presence," said Mulligan.
A special thank you goes to the McDonogh Parents Association Race for the Cure Committee, chaired by Chris Fiorino and Natasha Wesker, for uniting the McDonogh community in the effort. Thanks also to the sponsors of the school's team: the generous support of Price Modern, LLC, The Footlick Family Foundation, and the Footlick, Schaller, Caputo, and Settleman families.
