McDonogh Announces the Appointment of Charles Britton as 12th Head of School

The board of trustees of McDonogh School today announced the appointment of Charles W. Britton as head of school, effective July 1, 2007. Britton will succeed W. Boulton "Bo" Dixon, who is retiring after 15 years as McDonogh's headmaster and 40 years as an educator.

Britton is currently headmaster at the Casady School, a highly regarded, coeducational independent school in Oklahoma City serving 850 students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12. Prior to his arrival at Casady in 2002, Britton held a range of progressively responsible administrative and teaching positions at Trinity-Pawling School in New York, St. Mark's School of Texas, and Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh. The Southport, Maine native holds a bachelor's degree in English from Lake Forest College, where he played ice hockey, and a master's degree, also in English, from Middlebury College.

Said McDonogh School Board President Charles O. Monk, II, "Charlie Britton has an excellent track record as an independent school educator, administrator, and leader. We believe that Mr. Britton has not only the vision and moral integrity to lead our school but he has that special quality of great educators to connect with kids. Please join our board in welcoming Charlie and Jennifer Britton and their two children to the McDonogh family."

Britton's selection as head of McDonogh School is the result of an extensive national search, which began last spring after Dixon announced his intention to step down. The school engaged consultants Carney, Sandoe and Associates to identify candidates. A search committee picked Britton from among an outstanding group of applicants, and the board of trustees voted unanimously on Monday to hire him as the 12th head of McDonogh School.

Set on an 800-acre campus in Baltimore County, McDonogh is the area's largest coeducational independent school, enrolling 1,292 girls and boys in kindergarten through grade 12. Now in its 134th year, the school attracts talented students from central Maryland with its superior faculty, vibrant academic, arts, and athletic programs, five-day boarding opportunity for students in grades 9-12, and extensive school bus transportation system.
