While many of us were relaxing and enjoying free time during our recent spring break, a group of 11 Upper School students and three chaperones traveled to New Orleans on a service mission. They toured the area with Gretna Mayor Ronnie Harris, provided valuable support for McDonogh 26, gutted a damaged home destroyed by the hurricane, and slept on air mattresses in a church’s sanctuary.
It may not sound glamorous, but it was definitely a meaningful way to spend five days of the students’ spring break, according to Michelle Kriebel, organizer of McDonogh’s New Orleans service project trip. In fact, several students are planning to return to New Orleans for their senior projects and underclassmen are asking when they will have a turn to participate in such a rewarding experience.
“From the moment Sally Falcone, a teachers’ aid at McDonogh 26, greeted us at the airport with Mardi Gras beads until we departed with gift bags from the City of Gretna and McDonogh 26, we received such a warm welcome and appreciation for our efforts,” Michelle explained. “In addition to hands-on projects such as hauling computers to a storage area, moving mulch for the playground, and installing a canopy for protection from the rain during after-school pickup, the upper schoolers spent valuable time before and during school hours connecting with the students of McDonogh 26, some of whom are still in a state of transition following Katrina.”
McDonogh School has raised approximately $25,000 for McDonogh 26 since Katrina hit in August 2005. This trip served as one of many connections McDonogh has made with its sister school in New Orleans. Prior to departing for the airport, the McDonogh representatives presented each of the McDonogh 26 students with a card from a Lower School student and a pencil case with a ruler and pencils that read, “McDonogh Connection: Baltimore and Gretna Together 2006.”
