Students, faculty, friends, and Class of 2006: good morning. Welcome to the 2005-2006 McDonogh School year. I would like to offer my message to you this morning through my first experiences with McDonogh. April 12, 1994. I was a small rising first-grader, visiting McDonogh’s Kindergarten. I entered the Kindergarten building to be greeted by an extremely friendly Mrs. Ward and an enthusiastic group of kindergartners, some of whom are sitting to my right today. The whole day, I was intrigued by the warm atmosphere the kindergarten maintained as I and my future classmates went through a variety of activities like math, reading, P.E., and the one thing that shocks me to this day: nap time. I could not believe that McDonogh devoted a school period to the recuperation and well-being of its students. Even at age 5, I quickly saw that McDonogh was more than an academic institution; it was a family, a community of people working together selflessly for the purpose of learning. When I returned in September as a first grader in Mrs. Greenwood’s class, my experience was no different. Because we were taught in such a tight-knit, nurturing community, we began to enjoy learning, to value each lesson and make it our own. Each year I would come back to McDonogh in September, excited to learn again. My love of learning, and gratitude to McDonogh for that, has never stopped and will never stop. Moreover, I believe that there is some facet of the McDonogh education that can engage each and every one of us McDonogh students. It does not matter if you are in Kindergarten or the Class of 2006. If you can learn to enjoy learning and pursue with passion what interests you, you will learn the most valuable lesson that McDonogh School offers but cannot teach. I encourage all of you to take on this lesson, knowing that if you need help or encounter adversity, you will have a community of students, faculty, and friends on your side. With that, I wish you all an outstanding year.
