Beth L.'05 recently won the prestigious Cum Laude Honor Society’s district essay competition for her paper on “Reflections on Real Iron.” The paper compares and contrasts the views on poetry expressed by Seamus Heaney in his poems, “The Forge” and “Personal Helicon.” The competition honors the best paper written for a class assignment by a student attending a school with a Cum Laude chapter. Her paper was chosen as the best in District IV, which includes 41 schools throughout Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, the District of Columbia, Canada, England, France, Spain, the Philippines and Puerto Rico.
McDonogh School has been awarding Cum Laude Honor Society membership to top McDonogh scholars since 1955. This is the second year for the Cum Laude Society’s essay competition and the second year that a McDonogh student has won the district competition.
