It happens about this time every year. The telltale signs of fall become apparent on the McDonogh campus. In addition to the vibrant colors that grace the many trees, boldly painted orange and black banners with “Go McD. Beat Gilman” hang at the campus entrances and the Allan Building as the McDonogh community celebrates Spirit Week and its 90th annual rivalry with Gilman.
Each division—upper, middle and lower schools—will participate in a myriad of activities that will promote school spirit and raise money for Katrina relief efforts for McDonogh School #26 in New Orleans. Spirit t-shirts for $15 and buttons for $2 are being sold during lunch periods this week and this weekend’s football game. The week’s activities will culminate with the school-wide Spirit Parade and Pep Rally on Friday, November 11 at 1:30 p.m. and the Homecoming football game on Saturday with a 1 p.m. kick-off at the John McDonogh Stadium.
This year, the Student Government Association (SGA) started off the week with a special assembly that recapped “McDonogh Heritage.” Through several comical skits and a look down memory lane, students learned that McDonogh’s school spirit is as strong today as it every was. During the week, upper school students are encourage to wear their 2005 spirit t-shirts, outfits from their favorite decade, pajamas and of course, orange and black. The middle school division will also be participating in a poster contest and several dress-up days.
