McDonogh tops St. Mary's in football, 28-0

When McDonogh played Penn Charter at John McDonogh Stadium two weeks ago, a St. Mary’s coach, with video camera in hand, captured the game, hoping to get a scouting report.

Unfortunately for him, the Eagle team that lost 9-0 on that Saturday afternoon was nowhere to be found on this day.

Instead he saw a powerful Eagle offense led by Nick M., who rushed for 90 and scored three rushing touchdowns, and quarterback Rory S., who threw for over 200 yards, including a 10 yard touchdown pass, as McDonogh shutout St. Mary’s 27-0 on the road Thursday afternoon in Annapolis.

Eagle players stepped up in other areas as well. Jesse S. started at Center today, replacing team captain Von T., who was unavailable for today’s game. After Jesse thwarted some pre-game jitters, he was all business. But Jesse attributes the whole line’s play in paving the way for the team’s sick ground attack.

“It was really tough to step in for Von, but the entire line stepped it up to help compensate for the loss,” he said.

The line was also instrumental in protecting their quarterback. St. Mary’s clogged the box on defense, forcing Rory to throw over the top and hit favorite targets Tony L. and Justin D. Rory hit those receivers several times during key third down conversions in the second and third quarters to keep McDonogh’s offense drives operative.

Nick scored two of his touchdowns on offense drives in the first quarter. Early in the game, he ran in from five yards to cap off a drive that saw two key passes from Rory. Than later, Nick set up his own TD, running 15 yards to the three, than busting in the end zone on the next play

Heading into halftime, the McDonogh defense made a key goal line stand on its own three to prevent St. Mary’s from scoring. After the St. Mary’s QB kept the ball on a dive option to take it 45 yards, the Eagles blitzed aggressively to stymie the Saint’s drive. With the Eagles on top 14-0 starting the third, Nick continued his brilliant play. Bouncing out to the right side on a handoff, he took off for 60 yards to score yet another touchdown. Later in the quarter, Rory threw a fade to Justin for the game’s final touchdown.

With the win, the Eagles improve to 3-1, and more importantly, prove that they will be a force to be reckoned with in the MIAA “A” Conference this year. They will square off with ninth ranked Calvert Hall on September 4 at 1 p.m. at Paul Angelo Russo Field in Towson, MD.
