Mix It Up at Lunch Day

Students went out of their comfort zones on Tuesday, November 15, when the Middle School participated in Mix It Up at Lunch Day, a national program that encourages young people to challenge the social climates at their schools. The event was organized by the Middle School diversity and leadership groups with the hope of getting their peers to meet someone new, learn something new, taste something new, and have a great time while doing it.

Students were assigned to a lunch table with a mix of students from each grade level. To break the ice and get conversations started, students wore t-shirts that represented something of interest to them. Discussions were also spurred on by questions in a bag full of conversation starters placed in the center of each table. Topics ranged from favorite vacation spots and movies to favorite sports and restaurants. A student at one table announced that his favorite restaurant was VanGogh’s in Amsterdam, while a student at another table proclaimed that his favorite sport was hapkido.

In addition to challenging their social skills, the kids also tested their taste buds. Each table was given a variety of unusual juices to try. Comments about the flavors varied. After tasting guanabana nectar, one student declared, “That’s disgusting!”

The event was a huge success in getting students to talk and laugh with kids outside of their normal circle of friends. Before dismissing students from lunch, Head of Middle School Darren Ford encouraged them to take this experience outside of the dining hall. “If you see someone you had lunch with today on the bus or around campus, say hello,” concluded Mr. Ford.

Last year more than four million students at 9,000 schools participated in Mix It Up at Lunch Day. This was McDonogh’s third year to participate in the program.
