Matt and a friend had been duck hunting in an Eastern Shore marsh when their canoe overturned in frigid water about 100 yards from shore. A third friend, traveling in a kayak, was able to go for help.

In the fall of 2001, Matthew Bly Cowdrey transferred to McDonogh from Easton High School. His friends remember him as kind, caring, energetic, and outgoing. They also remember his great smile. Matt was a member of the football and lacrosse teams. He performed more than the required 40 hours of community service, working with abused children and adults in day care during his years at Easton High.

About 40 students and teachers gathered January 19 in the Kiplinger Library to remember Matt and express their grief. The alumni office notified Matt's classmates and graduates in the classes preceding and following his.
