Step-dancing senior John T. was crowned Mr. GQ 2006 on Friday, March 24 before a large crowd in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre. He was chosen from among nine contestants, including classmates Talley B., Corey D., Zach G., Stephen M., Chris R. and Zach S. and juniors Robby F. and Adair M. Assisting the contestants as escorts were seniors Anna, Rashida, Devin, Caitlin, Vicki, Mia, Ali, Grace, and Carolyn.
Capable emcee-organizers Alli H. and Melanie H. kept the competition moving. After enthusiastic introductions, contestants demonstrated their talent, mostly in music and dance. Then, faculty judges Bridget Collins, Mara Daniel, Bo Dixon, Libet Ottinger, and Bill Seal, along with last year’s winner, Darrius Heyward-Bey, narrowed the field to five finalists. Each finalist had to answer a question chosen randomly out of a hat before the judges chose the winner.
John accepted his crown and scepter from Mr. GQ 2004, Robert Hellauer, and Mr. GQ 2005, Darrius Heyward-Bey. As the winner, John chose his favorite charity, the Alzheimer's Association, to receive the event proceeds.
