MS Geography Bee has Repeat Winner

The entire Middle School packed Ceres M. Horn Theatre on Friday, January 7, to watch classmates compete in the annual National Geographic Geography Bee. Contestants from grades five through eight who won in their respective social studies classes were quizzed on their knowledge of U.S., world, scientific, and current events geography.

After an hour and a half of difficult questions and impressive answers, Philip S. ’09 was declared the champion. Philip is no stranger to geography bee success – he won this trademark middle school event three years ago, as a fifth grader. Another previous winner, Joe J. ’09, was second in this year's contest.

With his victory, Philip moves on to the difficult competition at the state level in the spring. A victory there will give him the chance to compete in the National Geography Bee in Washington, D.C., hosted by Alex Trebek of Jeopardy! fame.

McDonogh’s own Alex Trebek, longtime social studies teacher Ted Scocos, ran the school bee once again with assistance from colleagues on the social studies faculty.
