My Name Is. . .But Today, I'm. . .

It was March 2, but it could have easily been mistaken for Halloween or an American-theme costume party as McDonogh School third graders filed into the Ceres M. Horn Theatre complete with costumes, wigs and props. But, it was not an ordinary costume party as Noreen Lidston, head of Lower School, welcomed the audience to join the students in a trip “from sea to shining sea.” It was the annual Third Grade American Biography Day, a culmination of weeks of the children’s hard work. As part of the third grade curriculum, the students researched, wrote and memorized their speeches about famous Americans of their choice. Represented were authors, poets, musicians, painters, politicians, activists, explorers, inventors and athletes.

According to Lidston, the assignment helps the children understand personalities, events and obstacles that many of these famous people had to overcome in order to achieve notable accomplishments and bring this country to where it is today. Once on stage, the third graders amazed their families, friends and fellow students with their knowledge and poise as they recited their biographical sketches. In addition to the speeches, each class sang a well-known American song, including “Skip to My Lou,” “Clementine,” “Erie Canal,” and “Yankee Doodle.”
