Peace Advocate Brings Message to Campus

McCarthy, who founded the Center for Teaching Peace in 1985 to promote the addition of peace studies in schools, presented various examples of legal, moral, and political interventions that have averted violence. They work, he said.

He also invited students to commit themselves to three things: prayer, service, and nonviolence. In prayer, McCarthy suggested that they ask God for wisdom: "What do you want from me? How do I use my gifts better?" As for service, McCarthy asked students to think about how they want to serve society when they're ready. He stressed the value of experiential knowledge: "You can make all A's in school and go out and flunk life."

After taking questions from the audience, McCarthy added, "You need not go out and change the world, just keep the world from changing you." His parting word to students: "Start."

The author of I'd Rather Teach Peace and other titles then met with classes, explaining his viewpoints and encouraging discussion.
