Perfect Day for a Biology Lesson Outside

Juniors in Rob Smoot's biology class took advantage of the beautiful weather, as they and their teacher examined the characteristics of campus trees.

The Upper School science curriculum, introduced in 1974, follows a unique sequence. Freshman take introductory (conceptual) physics, sophomores take chemistry, and juniors take biology. Juniors and seniors may then take advanced courses and electives in areas such as engineering, marine biology, epidemics, bio-ethics, environmental science, and more.

McDonogh teachers say the sequence inspires students to enroll in science electives in greater numbers. It is estimated that 25% of U.S. schools now use the physics-chemistry-biology model.
