The five students in John Lehr's Photo II class created their own street photography, each producing a series of 10 compelling prints. Nikki, Kate, Match, and Jess chose to photograph ordinary people doing ordinary things--picking a pumpkin, sitting outside, and thinking in solitude.
Matt, however, decided to focus his lens on life after September 11. "I wanted to document this event in a way that I had not seen in the newspaper or on TV. I wanted to capture the reaction of 'the common person' living in everyday suburbia," he said.
Matt found inspiration in photographer Walker Evans' images of the Great Depression. "His pictures said a lot, while at the same time they were artistic."
After photographing numerous flags at half-mast downtown, Matt found his most distinctive images in the suburbs. Said Matt, "I had never seen messages written on signs like the way they were after September 11."
Slice-of-life images by Jess, Nikki, Match, Matt, and Kate are on display in Keelty Hall.
