Photo II Exhibit Features Images of People, Life After September 11

Photo II projectThe five students in John Lehr's Photo II class created their own street photography, each producing a series of 10 compelling prints. Nikki, Kate, Match, and Jess chose to photograph ordinary people doing ordinary things--picking a pumpkin, sitting outside, and thinking in solitude.

Matt, however, decided to focus his lens on life after September 11. "I wanted to document this event in a way that I had not seen in the newspaper or on TV. I wanted to capture the reaction of 'the common person' living in everyday suburbia," he said.

Photo IIMatt found inspiration in photographer Walker Evans' images of the Great Depression. "His pictures said a lot, while at the same time they were artistic."

After photographing numerous flags at half-mast downtown, Matt found his most distinctive images in the suburbs. Said Matt, "I had never seen messages written on signs like the way they were after September 11."

Slice-of-life images by Jess, Nikki, Match, Matt, and Kate are on display in Keelty Hall.
