Remarkable Season for McDonogh Basketball

After several years of being bumped out of league tournaments before reaching the finals, the third-ranked boys (22-7) and fourth-ranked girls (21-4) basketball teams made it to their respective championships. In both cases, the underdog Eagles defeated teams ranked second.

Disappointment came when the Eagles came up short in the finals.

Still, ‘06-‘07 was a remarkable season for McDonogh basketball.

In the boys semifinals at Archbishop Spalding on February 20, the Eagles picked the right time to vanquish the Mt. St. Joseph Gaels, 49-48. They lost to the Gaels twice in the regular season.

The girls, meanwhile, caught fire in their semi-final game, beating Towson Catholic, 67-49, in the TC gym on February 22. Reporter Glenn Graham described the victory as “surprisingly comfortable” in his account published in The Sun the next day.

The boys felt nothing resembling comfort in their February 23 final at Gilman against undefeated and heavily favored Towson Catholic. The Eagles tried to stay in it, but TC dominated, 71-49.

The girls’ final the next day at Goucher College was a totally different story. Up against four-time champ and top-ranked St. Frances, the Eagles stayed tough. At the end of regulation, the game was tied, 61-61. St. Frances was able to pull ahead in the four-minute overtime, 68-63.

“Many have told me that yesterday’s game was the best championship game in IAAM A Conference league history,” wrote girls varsity coach Tom Gizzi to his team afterward. He commended them for playing with such heart and sportsmanship. “Yesterday’s game was everything high school sports should be about.”

McDonogh fans made up the overwhelming majority of the capacity crowds for both championships.
