Three McDonogh teams began working in December to design, build, and operate their robots using Lego Mindstorms robotics systems. NASA supplied the Lego sets and a teacher's guide. The main objective was to develop effective teamwork in the areas of planning, communication, cooperation, and coordination--skills used by NASA in the space program.
McDonogh groups competed in team table tennis against 33 other teams from 17 area middle schools. One hundred ping-pong balls were put onto a ping-pong table, and each team was to use their three robots to get their ping-pong balls into the opponent’s half of the table. The team whose robots put the most balls in the opponent’s half won.
McDonogh's team of Jack D., Jordan L., Conor S., Ali S., and Jeff W. won “Best Teamwork” award. All of McDonogh’s teams, however, learned that goals can be accomplished by effective teaming. Some of these students may go on to be tomorrow’s engineers and scientists.
