The second grade children dove right into their first science unit entitled "Life in the Rainforest." The children began the school year with a guided imagery story that introduced them to rainforest features such as light, shade, warm temperatures, humidity and sounds. They studied the locations, importance and diversity of the rainforest ecosystem. Each child created a poster of the rainforest highlighting its different layers. These posters were used to create a second grade rainforest grand mural. Each child sampled edible products of the jungle, such as pineapple, cinnamon, cloves, coffee, chocolate, etc.
Their study of the rainforest also offered students the chance to explore the scientific concepts of the water cycle, adaptation, and conservation, and inspired learning in ecosystems. Each student created a miniature jungle in a two-litre plastic bottle. The children were able to see the evaporation/condensation almost immediately as the temperature inside the bottles rises and falls.
Lower School science teacher Peggy Moag encourages all families to visit a zoo or botanical garden with your children to see the living treasures of the rainforest! "Ever since we began I've been dreaming of how much fun it would be to hang out in the Costa Rican canopy with the sloths and howler monkeys!"
