Spanish Spoken Here

When Upper School Spanish teacher Patricia Tasher asked Headmaster Bo Dixon if some Hispanic children from Baltimore’s Centro de la Communidad could attend Camp Red Eagle in order to learn English, his answer was a resounding “yes.”

Tasher saw this as a win-win opportunity. The 36 Spanish-speaking youngsters ages 7 to 13 could practice their English while enjoying the whole camp experience. At the same time, her 14 McDonogh student volunteers, all of whom take Spanish, could help teach while earning required community-service hours.

Tasher was right. The Camp Red Eagle “Eagles” thrived during three glorious weeks of music, drama, art, woodworking, story time, horseback riding, swimming and English. Her volunteer counselors also benefited. Said Andrew G., a junior, “When I heard about this, I thought it would be a great thing to do. It’s really neat how these kids have opened up.”

And open up, they did. Fausto, 13, a recent arrival from El Salvador, explained how hard it is “when somebody talks to you and you don’t understand.” Because most come from Spanish-speaking homes whose refugee parents work multiple, menial jobs to support them, Tasher explains that “Camp is special. It opens these children to a different world.”
