From the program note by Upper School Drama Director Kevin Costa for the joint Chesapeake Shakespeare Comapny and McDonogh Theatre Lab production of Macbeth on November 2 and3.
A few days ago, I was asked “Why the Macbeth Residency? I responded, first, that it was so our students would have the experience of working on a professional production alongside seasoned actors performing Shakespeare. And this, of course, is true.
But I went on to explain the residency’s broader goal—to make evident the relationship between what we do in school and what is occurring in the larger world around us. School, I believe, isn’t a place where you’re held until you’re ready to start life; life is already well underway for our students, and we teachers are charged to find ways to promote this belief. We think the Macbeth Residency is one way to achieve this.
The Chesapeake Shakespeare Company believes this, too. Student actors who intern with CSC—and McDonogh students have had this opportunity over the last two summers—always say that they feel like one of the company, and the mentorship that occurs in those productions is life-changing. This residency, too, is designed to get our students in the trenches with mentors who share their love and passion for theatre. Isn’t that an authentic way to learn? We think so.
So this is why we’re here tonight—the actors and you—to share an experience that will, we trust, yield more than we can measure in hours and days. Whether it’s the memory of teaching artists in the classroom, an indelible phrase of Shakespeare, or a glance that two actors exchanged in the midst of this great tragedy, I hope that our students will one day look back and say, “We did that at McDonogh!”
