Tour de Clay Exhibit, Lecture Take Shape

Featured in the Tuttle Gallery now through April 1 is “Worlds Apart,” culturally-influenced sculptures by professional artists and college professors Marina Kuchinski and Ampofo-Anti. This display is part of The Tour de Clay, the largest ceramics exhibition in the United States. McDonogh’s gallery is one of 160 sites in the Baltimore area to host.

Head of Upper School Art Oletha DeVane brought the exhibit to campus, in part, to expand students’ notions of clay artistry. Visiting the gallery, students can see the contrasts between Kuchinski’s figurative work and Ampofo-Anti’s symbolic pieces that evoke his native Ghana. On March 17, upper schoolers will get a different view of sculpture when Ampofo-Anti and one of his former pupils, Maryland Institute visiting artist Lawson Oyekan, share their insights in “Spirit into Form,” a 10 a.m. public lecture in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre. The two sculptors, who have not seen each other since the time they shared in a Ghana studio, will give a workshop later that day for McDonogh’s art students. The collaboration between professional artists and students is expected to produce a sculpture for campus display.

Not to be left out, a group of fourth and seventh graders participated in another statewide Tour de Clay event, Clay Day, on March 4. Under the supervision of middle school art teacher Denise Wolf, the students worked in teams to create various coil pots and tiles depicting the theme of this year's multicultural celebration, “Diversity is Beautiful.”
