London-based community artist Maria-Theresa Fernandes, whose world travels inform her work, has brought her most recent pieces to McDonogh’s Tuttle Gallery. Her large, intricately woven fiber art and textile collages illustrate the contrast between her home in urban, multicultural London and her recent visit to the rural, provincial French town of Marmay-sur-Seine south of Paris.
Supported by a foundation grant, Fernandes spent three months in 2005 making art that celebrates the vast open spaces of the tranquil French landscape. Fernandes pays homage to the experience in "Connecting Stories and Memories," which will be on display through March 17.
Fernandes is also serving as a visiting artist in the Upper School, where she is showing Art I students how to create art with textiles. Head of Upper School Art Oletha DeVane invited Fernandes to advise students, who benefit from exposure to working artists.
