From December 5-8, six Upper School students--Ami D., Kendrick G., Julie E., Mona A., Casey G., and myself, along with six McDonogh teachers--Mrs. Howell, Mrs. Thompson, Mrs. Nagle, Ms. Collins, Mr. Walker, and Mr. Dom Damico-- attended the Student Diversity Leadership/People of Color Conference. This year's POCC theme was "Connecting Cultures, Connecting Worlds," and the theme of the SDLC was "A Passion for Peace: Expression to Action."
We were among over 2,000 people at the conference from all across the country, there to share our experiences and learn from one another. There were 611 students, who, in addition to discussions, participated in various activities such as fish bowl, body sculptures, and Kivel's Class Race--exercises that helped us learn a lot about each other. All the teachers went to various workshops and had a chance to hear different speakers.
At the end of our trip, we felt that we had garnered some valuable knowledge and that we would be prepared to help open of the minds of other people. We recognized that our task is to help break down the barriers. The conference was truly a rewarding experience for all of us.
