The McDonogh vans rolled out of the parking lot on Friday, October 10 at 10 a.m. with a dozen upper school students, led by Kevin Costa and Laddie Levy, bound for the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton, Virginia. The ASC is home to the world-renowned Blackfriars Theatre, a re-creation of Shakespeare’s indoor playing space of the same name, which was in use by his company, The King’s Men, in the first decade of the 17th century.
The twelve students who attended the weekend event attended four plays – "King Lear," "Twelfth Night," "Richard II," and "Measure for Measure" – which were performed according to the principles of “original practice,” or “OP” for short. OP theatres attempt to rehearse and perform as scholars believe Shakespeare and his contemporaries did. In this way, the McDonogh students not only experienced Shakespeare’s wonderful works; they were also immersed in the conditions of playgoing at the height of the English renaissance. These students also enjoyed several master classes with ASC’s teaching artists, one of which was a critique by an ASC actor of the letter scene from "Twelfth Night," which was performed by four McDonogh juniors. On Sunday, an additional group of McDonogh students from Laddie Levy’s current Shakespeare elective joined the weekend group for the performance of "Measure for Measure." By all accounts, this was a wonderful event. There was one question that everyone asked, however – “when can we come back?”
