The Web site contains a complete chronicle of students' June 2001 trip to Staufen, where McDonogh's partner-school, Faust Gymnasium, is located. It shows students with their exchange families, on side trips, in school, and at play. Students' families back home were able to see what the travelers experienced.
German teacher and exchange organizer Buck Lyon-Vaiden loved the Web-based postcard concept when he first saw a California school’s version of it in 1998. “I looked at it and thought, isn’t that neat!,” Lyon Vaiden recalls. He borrowed the idea for his 1999 exchange, taking with him a digital camera and securing the expertise of Michael Seeger, Faust Gymnasium’s webmaster.
This time, he not only took the camera, but recruited his own technology expert, exchange participant Julie E. ‘03. Lyon-Vaiden handed off a total of disks full of images to Julie, who formatted pages and forwarded them to Herr Seeger for posting to the Web.
The travelers have long since returned home, but their exchange trip Web site continues to draw visitors. A least one family plans to print photos from it to supplement the few their son took. And Buck Lyon-Vaiden has bigger plans. “I can use it as publicity for the next exchange.”
