At an all-school faculty and staff meeting on Friday, April 22, Headmaster Bo Dixon was pleased to announce that McDonogh parents Nancy and Donn Lewis established a professional development fund for faculty. Named for Upper School math teacher Mina Wender, whom colleague Dave Harley has referred to as “the smartest person in the school,” the fund will support the pursuit of study outside the classroom for McDonogh teachers - fostering lifelong learning and the rejuvenation of professional skills. Encouraging teachers to pursue advanced degrees, to attend conferences and meetings, and to travel and study during the summer helps them develop new skills that translate into better educational experiences for McDonogh students.
The headmaster described Mina's intellectual prowess as “all but legendary. She was a contestant on Jeopardy; she is the acknowledged expert in the math department when anyone has a question they can't answer; she routinely knocks off the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle in about a half hour. The only thing greater than her intellect is her heart. In her many (and important) roles, but especially as the Upper School registrar, she is constantly bombarded with requests, which she always tries to accommodate. She will do anything for her colleagues: covering a class, baking a cake, you name it!”
The gift comes at a time when the school is about to embark publicly on a major fundraising campaign to support scholarship, technology, endowment to maintain campus buildings, and most importantly, additional funding for faculty compensation and professional development.
