“The Wings of Hope” project, which started as an idea by several members of the Lower School staff, literally took off as the McDonogh School family reached out to one of its own.
In a letter to parents, Head of Lower School Noreen Lidston, explained that Assistant Head of Lower School MaryLu Greenwood’s significant other, John Rothrock, was critically ill after suffering a tear to his aorta. To demonstrate McDonogh’s affection and support for Greenwood and Rothrock, lower schoolers, faculty, and friends set a goal of making 1,000 origami cranes for them. According to Lidston, Japanese legend has it that if a sick person folds 1,000 paper cranes, the gods will grant his/her wish and restore him/her to health.
“The younger students decorated paper that was used to make the cranes, while the older students made the 12-step folding process look easy! Our mighty mathematicians sorted the cranes by color, estimated their number, counted them, and graphed their results,” explained Lidston. A total of 1,142 cranes were made.
The beautiful birds were on display in Elderkin Hall’s main lobby until Friday, November 11, when “they took flight and carried our thoughts and prayers to both Mary Lu and John,” she added.
