The Annual Cardboard Boat Race on McDonogh's duck pond is Friday, May 29. The "Parade of Boats" from the Rollins-Luetkemeyer Athletic Center to the pond will start at 2 p.m. and the race will begin at 3 p.m.
After donning life jackets, Upper School students will race across the pond in colorful, life-size boats that they have constructed from cardboard. At the end of the regatta, one lucky team will walk away with the coveted "Best Overall Boat" award, affectionately known as "BOB." The "Titanic" award goes to the best sinker. Yes, the trophies are cardboard, too!
For the students who have spent the last three weeks constructing their vessels, it's a test of how well they've combined the principles of physics and engineering with artistry. Each crew is given the same quantity of materials to build their boats. This year's creations include PBY Catalina, Sesame Street, USA Boat, Star Wars, Viking Ship,The Black Pearl, The Yellow Submarine, Toga Party, Orioles Boat, and The Hannah Montana.
Aside from being a lot of fun, it is a great exercise in teamwork. You won't want to miss this hilarious end-of-the school year event!
