At the conclusion of the Founder's Day service on October 9, each Upper School advisory group received a framed print of McDonogh's character compass, which was recently introduced to students, faculty, and staff.
While explaining the importance of the compass to Founder's Day guests, Head of Upper School Kirsten Adams said, "The McDonogh compass symbolizes the sense of direction we seek to impart to each of our students, indeed to everyone in the McDonogh community. It contains four cherished virtues, respect, responsibility, honesty, and kindness, and revolves around a central commitment to service."
Students were charged with hanging the character compass print in a place of honor in their advisors' rooms.
In closing, Adams added, "The compass conveys in a different way what we have celebrated this morning, in honoring our founder who urged us to do the greatest possible amount of good and in honoring our cherished departed who have left our world a better place."
The compass image was designed by Joe Vidmar '09 and refined by professional artist Susan Detwiler It is the symbol of McDonogh's character education effort.
The community has always been engaged in values-based curricular and extracurricular endeavors. The Character Education Committee was formed in 2008 to ensure that such efforts become a coordinated, schoolwide priority. After examining the nature of character education, the cross-divisional committee audited McDonogh’s particular initiatives, evaluated them, and proposed improvements.
