On Wednesday, August 26, the campus was abuzz with yelling and laughter as the incoming ninth grade class participated in the annual Freshman Orientation program. One thing that was not to be heard among the commotion, however, was the common student lament that learning is not fun.
The freshmen started out the day in the Ceres M. Horn Theater, where Honor Council President Babe B. '09 and Vice President Josh H. '09 familiarized the new upper schoolers with the system of trust and integrity that is the foundation of the McDonogh community.
From there the freshmen split into smaller groups by advisory. They rotated through a series of stations that combined fun activities and informative guidance.
At one station, senior Rollins-Luetkemeyer leaders and Senior Class Dean Andy Hilgartner talked about what it means to be a part of the McDonogh community and stressed the importance of engaging in the many facets of McDonogh life.
Then, competitive natures manifested themselves when the new freshmen played a fierce game of “huggy bear”, in which a single person called out a number and the throng of people milling around in the center then had to either form into tight hugging groups of that number or be eliminated.
At another station, senior leaders informed the advisories of this year’s initiative to raise money to buy livestock for impoverished areas and awarded fifteen dollars to the advisory that won a balloon-popping relay race. Afterward, Freshman Class Dean Jim Tsouvalos discussed everyday life at McDonogh and addressed any concerns the students had.
The advisories also took a tour of the academic buildings and learned about McDonogh’s many clubs while playing a game of geography twister – “right hand Europe!” – and even some volleyball.
