Rick Thompson Receives Teaching Honor

The John T. Grega Endowed Teaching Chair, established in 2003 by Lucy and Vernon Wright ’61 and their children in honor of Director of Religious Studies John Grega, was awarded to Middle School Science Teacher Rick Thompson on August 25.

Any one of Thompson’s students or colleagues can attest to his enthusiasm in the classroom. He makes learning fun while teaching students techniques such as making hypotheses. His own hypotheses, however, proved less than accurate that morning.

As Thompson reports it, “When Charlie Britton began the announcement, I immediately began guessing as to who he was describing. It was not until the mention of being a department head--about halfway through the speech--that I finally realized he was speaking about me.”

When that realization hit, Thompson says, “I was shocked, and at that moment it was very difficult to hold back my emotions. I felt both honored and proud of being part of such a great community.”

The feeling was mutual. Faculty and staff gave Rick Thompson a standing ovation.

McDonogh is Thompson’s first and only teaching job. He began in 1976 after graduating from Heidelberg College. He holds a master’s degree from the University of Maryland.

Among Thompson's achievements is the introduction of the annual three-day Chesapeake Bay trip for eighth graders. He also formed and advises the Green Team, a environmental action and awareness group for middle schoolers.

Thompson is the third recipient of the Grega Chair. Previous recipients include Lower School science teacher Peggy Moag and retired kindergarten teacher Donna Ward.
